Quique Setién highlights that the team did not lose faith in the second half and the reward came in the form of goals

Villarreal head coach Quique Setién spoke to the media to analyse his side’s 4-2 win over RCD Espanyol at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The Santander-born coach praised the work of his players, who didn’t lose faith after a first half in which the Yellows generated a lot, but couldn’t find the goal: “It seemed incredible that we ended up behind on the scoreboard at half-time. We had generated a lot and we didn’t manage to score. Luck comes and goes. I was pleased with the superiority we showed. We had to believe in our game and continue in the same vein.”

The goals, elusive in the first half, did come in the second half. Four goals to turn the score around and put the game to bed: “At half-time I insisted that we had to stay calm and keep going in the same direction. We scored the equaliser and we started to believe that we were going to win the game.”

Setién also emphasised that the win gives the team confidence and consolidates them in the fight for Europe: “We are stronger. This victory helps us to continue on this path. We are in the fight for Europe. We don’t want to lose the rhythm. We know what’s left and we want to compete until the end.”

Finally, he is already looking ahead to Villarreal’s upcoming league games, as they face RC Celta and Valencia CF in a week’s time: “We have to prepare well for both games. We’ll try not to let the fatigue affect us too much and to plan the games in the best way possible.”
