Mascot
GROGUET, our talisman
Our mascot is called Groguet, and its design represents the symbolism of the Submarine, the affectionate nickname by which Villarreal CF is known in international football.
The colours chosen for its creation are, as expected, those of the team: yellow and blue, the same ones worn by Villarreal CF supporters in the stands of the Estadio de la Cerámica at every home match.
The mascot, which was officially unveiled on 26th October 2001, has a strong body, featuring the armoured structure of a submarine and a human-like shape and expression. Groguet aims to represent the excitement and ambition the club has to establish Villarreal CF as a strong, consolidated team in the top tier of Spanish football.
Once the design of what is now our official mascot had been selected, the club organised a competition open to all children under 15 years old in the province of Castellón, inviting them to name the mascot.
On 13th December 2001, the panel selected the name Groguet from all the submissions received. Javier Fuster Almela, a native of Vila-real who was 12, years old at the time, was the creator of this original name.
The panel was made up of then Villarreal CF players Jesús Unanua and Unai Vergara, Vila-real deputy mayor Ramón Tomás, club director Manolo Gumbau, the then president of the APV (Villarreal CF Supporters’ Association) Susana García, and season-ticket holder Trinidad Santamaría.
From 2001 to the present day, supporters have been able to enjoy the presence of Groguet before kick-off and during half-time at every home match. In addition, the club’s official store stocks a wide range of merchandise featuring the mascot.
