Villarreal reach the semi-finals to repeat their best finish in the Champions League

Villarreal once again made history in the UEFA Champions League. The Submarine reached the semi-finals of the leading continental competition in a dream season. Unai Emery’s side qualified as UEFA Europa League champions in the previous season (2020/21) and managed to finish among the top four teams in Europe. They were drawn in Group F with Manchester United, Atalanta and Young Boys. After a thrilling winner-takes-all tie in Bergamo, which ended in the Submarine’s favour (2-3), the Yellows sealed their place in the last 16.

That was far from the end of the Subamrine’s European journey though, as the best was yet to come. In the Round of 16, Villarreal convincingly beat Juventus. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, a brilliant performance at the Old Lady’s stadium ended in a 0-3 win for the Yellows. In the quarter-finals, FC Bayern were Villarreal’s next victims. The German giants were still alive despite a win for the Submarine at the Estadio de la Cerámica (1-0), but a historic late Samu Chukwueze goal in the match at the Allianz Arena (1-1) allowed the Submarine to experience their second semi-final in the Champions League.

The Yellows came close to a miracle against Liverpool. Villarreal left Anfield after a 2-0 defeat. In the second leg, the Estadio de la Cerámica was rocking and in an unforgettable first 45 minutes, the Submarine managed to equalize. The dream finally came to an end in the second half, when Villarreal suffered from fatigue and injuries (2-3). A commendable performance that will be hard to forget.
