The 2006 Intertoto Cup was Villarreal CF’s shortest journey in a European competition. The Submarine played Slovenian side Maribor in the third round and ended up losing and getting knocked out of the tournament.
The first leg did not go down well with the Yellows, as Maribor took away a great 1-2 win and an advantage into the second leg, with goals from Rakic and Mihelic that counteracted Forlan’s goal.
The second leg was a tough match and Villarreal were unable to turn the tie around, drawing 1-1 with a goal by Nihat.
