THE ORIGINS OF VILLARREAL CF
A football-loving pharmacist brings the game to Vila-real
A new form of entertainment called football arrives in Vila-real thanks to José Calduch, who discovers the sport while studying Medicine in Barcelona and decides to bring it to his hometown for everyone to enjoy. On 10th March 1923, in the back room of the family pharmacy, José Calduch founds CD Villarreal, the predecessor of today’s Villarreal CF. That same year, he purchases a plot of land and converts it into the Campo del Villarreal, later named El Madrigal.

SUCCESS IN BLACK AND WHITE
Villarreal celebrate their first achievements before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War
As football quickly gained popularity, CD Villarreal began to rise and compete in their first matches. On 15th December 1935, the team from Vila-real, wearing white shirts and black shorts, were crowned regional champions, but the Spanish Civil War abruptly halted all sporting competition in the city.

THE REBIRTH OF A PASSION
Supporters' clubs keep football alive in Vila-real, with Foghetecaz as the leading force
Following the Spanish Civil War and the disappearance of CD Villarreal, football survived in the town thanks to local supporters' clubs. One team stood out above the rest: Club Atlético Foghetecaz. In 1944, the Town Hall purchased the facilities, converting them into a municipal ground. This footballing revival culminated in 1947, when the team took a decisive step by registering with the Valencian Football Federation under a name representing the town: CAF Villarreal. Soon after, the club claimed its first Regional Amateur Championship.

CLUB ATLÉTICO FOGHETECAZ BADGE
The badge of ‘Club Atlético Foghetecaz:. The name "Foghetecaz" came from the initials of the surnames of its founders: FO (Font), G (Gil), HE (Herrero), TE (Teuler), CA (Catalá) and Z (Zaragoza). The colons represented the rest of the people involved.

In 1944, the Council acquired the stadium, making it a municipal football ground.

CA Foghetecaz registered the team with the Valencian Federation as CAF Villarreal.

BACK ON THE WINNING TRACK
CAF Villarreal were crowned Regional Amateur Champions against CF Torrente at Campo de Vallejo with goals from García-Diago and González.

A GREAT FEAT AGAINST A GIANT
CAF Villarreal won the Regional Amateur Championship and reached the national stage. There, they eliminated FC Barcelona's amateur side (5-2) with four goals from Batiste and reached the semi-finals, where they fell to AR Chamberí.

DEBUT IN TERCERA AND THE SWITCH TO YELLOW
Villarreal consolidate themselves, adopt their definitive name and become the Yellow Submarine
Villarreal CF adopted their current name, which they have retained to this day. The club changed their kit, introducing a yellow shirt with blue shorts and socks with yellow trim. The team earned their first promotion to Tercera División, paving the way for the arrival of foreign players. In 1952, El Madrigal underwent its first major renovation, modelled after the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

EL MADRIGAL IN THE EARLY 1950s
El Madrigal is renovated and takes on the same dimensions as the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (105x70). The reopening match ends in a 3-1 win over Olímpic de Xàtiva.

FIRST PROMOTION TO TERCERA DIVISIÓN
Villarreal CF earned their first promotion to Tercera División after a 0-2 victory against Burjassot CF at the Camp del Bassot, with a brace from Chesa. The team remained in the division until 1961.

YELLOW SHIRT AND BLUE SHORTS
Villarreal CF debuted their new kit featuring a yellow shirt and blue shorts and socks with yellow trim in a Tercera División match against CF Gandía, winning 3-2.

1963-1973
A HISTORIC RISE TO PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL
The Yellow Submarine sail into the seas of the Segunda División
Villarreal CF earned promotion back to Tercera and achieved an unprecedented milestone: their first promotion to the Segunda División, clinched against Bilbao Athletic at the Santiago Bernabéu. The joy of this historic success gave birth to songs that still accompany the club to this day.

SECOND PROMOTION TO TERCERA DIVISIÓN
Villarreal CF are promoted once again to Tercera in Burjassot, a special place for the Submarine. This time with a goal from Vilar (0-1).

THE ADOPTION OF A POPULAR ANTHEM
During celebrations for the promotion to Tercera, a group of youngsters played “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles at Bar La Granja. The version by Los Mustang became the team’s unofficial anthem.

THE HEROES OF THE SANTIAGO BERNABÉU
Villarreal CF’s first promotion to the Segunda División. A historic milestone in the club’s history. Villarreal defeated Bilbao Athletic in a play-off match held at the Santiago Bernabéu (2-1), with goals from Luiche and Causanilles.

DAVID AGAINST GOLIATH
A historic cup win at El Madrigal. In the first leg of the Round of 16, Villarreal defeated FC Barcelona 1-0 thanks to a goal by Paraguayan player Casco in the 54th minute. The match made headlines across Spain.

1973-1983
CHALLENGING TIMES AND NEW HORIZONS
Villarreal return to regional football and El Madrigal shines for the first time
The Submarine went through difficult times. The club hit rock bottom with a harsh relegation to Regional Preferente, but recovered by winning the Regional Amateur Championship and earning another promotion to Tercera División. During this period, Villarreal begin playing friendlies against international sides, such as Gwardia Warsaw from Poland. The latter match marked the first use of floodlights at El Madrigal, although their official debut came later against UD Ibiza.

FIRST MATCHES AGAINST INTERNATIONAL OPPONENTS
The Yellow Submarine played its first fixture against a foreign team, Gwardia Warsaw from Poland, who won 0-1 with a goal from Marchack in the 67th minute.

THE INSTALLATION OF FLOODLIGHTS
Villarreal played their first official match under floodlights against UD Ibiza on a Sunday night at 10pm.

SECOND REGIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Villarreal CF won the Regional Amateur Championship for the second time in their history after beating CD Alcoyano 3-1. The visitors opened the scoring, but Villarreal turned the game around with goals from Forment, Claramunt and Also.

1983-1993
THE SUBMARINE RISES FROM THE DEPTHS
Promotion after promotion as Villarreal return to the Segunda División
Villarreal said goodbye to regional football. Players such as Adriano, Nadal and Honorio became key figures, guiding the team back to Spain’s second tier. This period was marked by two promotions: first to Segunda División B, and then a historic return to Segunda División. The streets of Vila-real and the stands of La Línea de la Concepción were filled with yellow joy.

ADRIANO, A YELLOW LEGEND
The Granada-born striker entered Villarreal folklore as the first player to score over 100 goals in official competitions. For decades, he held the honour of being one of the club’s all-time top scorers with 106 goals. His first came on 17th November 1985 against Olímpic de Xàtiva at El Madrigal.

PROMOTION TO SEGUNDA DIVISIÓN B
Villarreal CF secured promotion to Segunda División B after drawing 1-1 in Alaquàs, with a goal from Honorio. The result, combined with those of their rivals, confirmed their rise as they finished third in the standings.

THE COMEBACK PROMOTION
Following relegation in the 1989/90 season, Villarreal CF returned to Segunda B after defeating CF Balaguer 3-0 with goals from Honorio, Aparicio and Latorre. The team finished as runners-up in their Tercera División group.

THE ROCK WITNESSES THE YELLOW WAVE
Two decades later, the Submarine returned to Segunda División with a memorable 1-2 win over RB Linense. The team travelled by plane for the first time and is backed by over a hundred fans in La Línea de la Concepción. Goals from Alcañiz and Reyes sealed the triumph.

1993-2003
A DREAM PROMOTION TO THE TOP FLIGHT
Roig and Llaneza make an unthinkable dream come true
With the arrival of José Manuel Llaneza, who joined the club with the backing of Font de Mora, and Fernando Roig becoming the majority shareholder, Villarreal CF achieved the impossible: reaching the top flight and establishing themselves in the elite of Spanish football. The club grew rapidly and became more professional, driven by exemplary management. El Madrigal adapted to the new era, a training ground is built, and the first global stars arrive.

FERNANDO ROIG, PRESIDENT OF VILLARREAL CF
Fernando Roig acquired the majority of shares in Villarreal CF, then in Segunda División, from Pascual Font de Mora. This marked the start of an exciting and ambitious golden era for the Submarine.

VILLARREAL CF REACH THE ELITE
Following his arrival at the club, Fernando Roig promised promotion to the top flight and achieved it in his first season. The place in the play-offs was secured in the return leg against SD Compostela in San Lázaro with a 1-1 draw. Saavedra scored the decisive goal and Palop delivered a stellar performance.

EL MADRIGAL HOSTS THE NATIONAL TEAM
On 5th June, El Madrigal hosts Spain’s senior national team for the first time in an official match – a Euro 2000 qualifier. Spain beat San Marino 9-0.

QUICK RETURN TO THE TOP
Villarreal returned to the top flight after being relegated in their first season among the elite. A 1-1 draw against UD Las Palmas in the penultimate league match sparked celebrations in the streets of Vila-real.

VILLARREAL PRESENT THEMSELVES TO EUROPE
Villarreal CF won the Intertoto Cup final 2-1 on aggregate against SC Heerenveen, with goals from Calleja and Víctor. The summer tournament triumph earned them a place in the UEFA Cup, now known as the UEFA Europa League.

2003-2013
VILLARREAL AMAZE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL
The Submarine establish themselves in LALIGA and enjoy their first major continental nights
Villarreal impressed European football. The club became a competitive side in LALIGA and a regular contender in European competitions thanks to the contributions of legends such as Riquelme, Forlán, Cazorla, Senna and Bruno. During this period, they faced footballing giants such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan. Villarreal lifted two Intertoto Cups, reached one UEFA Champions League semi-final and two Europa League semi-finals, and also finished runners-up in LALIGA.
Villarreal lived a dream that eventually turned into a nightmare. The Yellow Submarine were unexpectedly relegated in 2012, only to return to the top flight the very next season.

A GIANT STEP FORWARD
After defeating Levante UD 4-1 on the final matchday, with goals from Josico, Forlán (2) and Figueroa, Villarreal secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds for the first time in their history. Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán won the European Golden Shoe after scoring 25 goals in the 2004/05 season.

AN UNFORGETTABLE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CAMPAIGN
Riquelme’s missed penalty left Villarreal agonisingly close to reaching the Champions League final. Pellegrini’s side, the tournament’s best debutants, were knocked out by Arsenal FC after eliminating Rangers FC and Inter Milan.

A HISTORIC RUNNERS-UP FINISH
Villarreal CF continued to write golden pages in their history. With remarkable consistency and excellent performances, the team led by Manuel Pellegrini finished second in LALIGA, driven by a fantastic start. The Submarine ended the season with 77 points, just eight behind champions Real Madrid.

A TOUGH BLOW TO END A FINE SEASON
Villarreal completed an excellent campaign, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for a third time and reaching the Europa League semi-finals. The Submarine chased their first continental final, but were knocked out by a strong FC Porto side who went on to win the tournament. Giuseppe Rossi had a prolific season, scoring 32 goals.

BACK TO THE TOP FLIGHT
Following a dramatic relegation to Segunda División, the Submarine bounced straight back. Villarreal secured their third promotion to the top flight at El Madrigal with a 1-0 win over UD Almería, with Jonathan Pereira scoring the decisive goal from a Cani assist.

2013-2023
A NEW RISE TO EUROPEAN GLORY
Under the leadership of Roig Negueroles, Villarreal rebuild and achieve their greatest success
After the unexpected relegation, Villarreal were forced to rebuild and came back stronger. Led by Fernando Roig Negueroles, the Submarine returned to the top flight, consolidated their position in the elite and once again became a European contender – not just to compete, but to win. Under Unai Emery, Villarreal conquered the UEFA Europa League in 2021 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2022, once again astonishing the footballing world. The club celebrated its centenary and undertook a remarkable redevelopment of the Estadio de la Cerámica.

EUROPE DELIGHTED BY THE YELLOW SUBMARINE AGAIN
Villarreal returned to shine in the Europa League, reaching the semi-finals. The Yellow Submarine won the first leg at home against Liverpool FC thanks to a goal from Adrián (1-0), but the English side turned the tie around with a 3-0 win at Anfield.

GDANSK GLORY
Villarreal CF made history by winning their first major title. A legendary team, led by Unai Emery, defeated Manchester United FC in the UEFA Europa League final in Gdansk. After a 1-1 draw, Villarreal triumphed in a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Rulli the hero. Gerard Moreno was named Player of the Tournament.

THE MAGIC OF BELFAST
Villarreal enhanced their history by competing in their first UEFA Super Cup, facing Champions League winners Chelsea FC. After a 1-1 draw, with Gerard Moreno scoring for the Submarine, Villarreal fell 6-5 on penalties in a valiant effort.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NIGHTS TO REMEMBER
Villarreal amazed the world once again by reaching the Champions League semi-finals for a second time. Continuing the momentum from their Europa League triumph, they knocked out Juventus and Bayern Munich before losing to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC (2-0 and 2-3).

CENTENARY WITH A STADIUM TRANSFORMATION
To celebrate their centenary, Villarreal CF undertook a major renovation of their home: the Estadio de la Cerámica. The works were inaugurated on New Year’s Eve with a derby victory over Valencia CF (2-1).
