Setién: “I am enormously proud”

The Villarreal head coach has praised the Submarine’s fantastic performance at the Santiago Bernabéu

Villarreal head coach Quique Setién has analysed the historic victory at the Santiago Bernabéu (2-3). He was extremely happy and satisfied with the great performance of his players against Real Madrid:

A complete performance

“This victory strengthens us a lot. We played a great game today despite starting with some inaccuracies. It took us a while to get the game where we wanted it to be. From then on, in the first half, we generated a lot and played in the opposition’s half. Madrid are Madrid and they always create chances.”

Three points to dream about the Champions League

“When you prepare your plan, you want things to go the way you want them to go. The most important thing is the three points. They bring us closer to the top positions and allow us to maintain our tempo and good feelings.”

A historic comeback

“We came from behind twice to take three points, which is very satisfying because of the big smile in the dressing room. I am very happy.”

Samu Chukwueze’s impressive match

“Samu Chukwueze had an extraordinary game, very complete. He had the efficiency to come up with two fabulous goals, but not only that. The defensive help, the constant threats. He’s a guy who is a great footballer. He’s in a fantastic moment of inspiration. He’s helping us a lot and he’s going to continue on this path. He wants to improve, he is receptive and a hard worker. We see the reward for his work on days like today when he scored two great goals.”

Pride

“Little by little, we have been making progress in the way we play the game. We’re getting better and better at things: pressing, decision making… It’s a great source of pride for me. Today’s game is a huge reward, to hurt them, to play in their half, to have chances and to win. I feel very proud. This is the way forward.”

Trigueros making history

“Trigueros is a great player, he has played 310 games in the first division. He had a great game, coming off through injury, and he helped us to maintain possession and the game we wanted.”
