Defeat for Villarreal Women against Granada (1-2)

The Yellows deserved more against a direct opponent in the fight for survival

Villarreal Women lost to Granada in a match in which the Yellows deserved a better result (1-2). The Andalusian side took a 0-2 lead, while a goal from McKenna made the final moments of the game exciting.

The match was very important. Both teams are fighting this season to avoid relegation and the tension was palpable. Tied on points in the table, a win would give them a lifeline for the remainder of the campaign.

The Yellows started brightly, with Fatou Kanteh creating danger on the right and Maria Llompart on the left. However, it was the Andalusian who took the lead in the 27th minute, when Carlota Suárez headed home a cross from the left flank. It was time for a comeback.

Nerea had the equaliser in her boots with a long-range shot that almost went into the top corner. She was denied by a miraculous save from goalkeeper Sandra.

The second half started with bad news for the Yellows. Laura Pérez crossed from the right flank and the ball ended up going in at the far post to the surprise of everyone watching the game at the Mini Estadi. Real bad luck for Villarreal Women. The game was evenly matched and the score was 0-2.

The Yellows didn’t give up and kept trying. A goal would put them in the match. Kayla McKenna got it when she picked up a loose ball in the box and slotted it into the net. It was game on. Maximum excitement (1-2, m. 68).

Lucia Romero had the equaliser soon after, but her left-footed shot from the edge of the area ended up hitting the post. McKenna also had a chance to score with a lob that didn’t go in either. What a shame”

Despite their best efforts, the scoreboard would not budge. The next game for the Yellows will be away against Athletic Club (Saturday, 6pm CEST). The fight continues.
