Marcelino has praised the effort of his players after the demanding win against RC Celta
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media to analyse the hard-fought league win over RC Celta (3-2): “It was a very important game. Now we can enjoy the victory with our loved ones over Christmas. I want to underline the good work of the players. The game was in our favour, with 3-0 on the scoreboard, but we conceded two goals again. The first one from a set piece.”
As for the defence, the Asturian coach acknowledged that we need to change our approach and become stronger at the back: “Let’s see if the year ends and in 2024 we are able to improve at the back. For many minutes we played a great game, creating goal scoring opportunities and then defensive weakness punished us again. It’s a shame what happened because if we hadn’t conceded the two goals we’d be talking about the change the team has made.”
Despite the defensive problems, Marcelino was satisfied with the three valuable points: “We have to defend and not give the opposition options. If we don’t do that, it’s very difficult for us to win. The last few games we’ve won have been 3-2. That’s not often. We have to change it, but we will be happy because we have won and because the reality is that I am satisfied with the players.”
Finally, the Villarreal head coach pointed out the path to victory: “To win, we have to do things the way we did until the second goal. That’s the path we have to follow.”
