The goalkeeper has acknowledged that he feels “privileged” to continue at Villarreal, where he feels settled
Pepe Reina has renewed his contract with Villarreal CF for another season, until June 2024. The goalkeeper from Madrid visited the facilities of Pamesa Cerámica, the club’s main sponsor, to sign his contract extension.
“I am excited to renew and play one more year at Villarreal. I arrived last year to play my last season here. The sensations have been very good and I am lucky that I have signed for one more. It’s a great gift to be able to continue playing and to be able to do so at this wonderful club, to which I feel so attached,” said the experienced goalkeeper after his renewal until June 2024.
For Pepe Reina, age is just a number: “I don’t set an expiry date for myself. Hopefully we’ll be in the same situation next year and if not, I’ll step aside. Here, at Villarreal, I started to feel like a footballer and I’m going to finish my career here with a smile on my face. This will be my last club.”
The Spanish international recognises that the renewal is a prize and that he has felt fortunate to be able to help the team from the pitch: “It wasn’t what I expected when I arrived here, but many things happen in football. I came with an assumed role and it has been changing. I was ready, I got the opportunity and I was able to help the team, which is what I came here for. In the end, it’s been a lot of playing time, but the important thing was to get the points, regardless of whether I played or not.”
As well as being an exceptional goalkeeper with an impressive career behind him, Pepe Reina is a key person in the Villarreal CF dressing room: “I’m positive and I try to create a good atmosphere in the dressing room. I try to contribute on and off the pitch. I’m proud that my team-mates see that I do that.”
