Marcelino: “We need to have the right mentality and motivation to win”

Villarreal face Sevilla this Saturday at 4:15pm CEST at La Cerámica

Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral appeared in front of the media ahead of this Saturday’s big match against Sevilla FC at La Cerámica (4:15pm CEST). The tie sees two teams who have grown into the season face each other.

Here is what he had to say:

Alberto Moreno, Gerard Moreno and Alfonso Pedraza

“Those three players are out for this game. None of them have recovered in time. They are slight niggles and Alfonso hasn’t recovered from the serious injury he picked up previously. Alberto and Gerard have slight muscular problems and there is a risk of aggravating them and we don’t have a pressing need to rush them.”

A big match at La Cerámica

“It’s a difficult, attractive game, we’re playing against a good team who have also underperformed, but who are in a very good momentum, four wins and a draw in the last five games. Hopefully we’ll be able to take into account the fact that we’re playing at home with our fans and win the game.”

Ending the season well

“Up to this point, the team has shown a very high level in the second half of the season. Celta’s defeat almost mathematically takes us away from our objective. We are far away from competitive teams with so few points to play for and it’s difficult, but we always have to have a winning mentality in front of our fans. In Vigo the team had a good attitude. We are satisfied with what the team offered playing with ten men. It’s good to finish with the best possible sensations after such a difficult year.”

Laying the groundwork

Laying the groundwork

“We have come here to work honestly in a difficult situation. We have to finish as well as possible and build a competitive team for next season with the objectives that the team has had for the last ten years. A team that generates enthusiasm. I think we have achieved that in the second half of the season. Then, the market will make us try to get it right to make a better and more stable team. That is the future and the present is Sevilla. We must have that mentality and motivation to win and take three points in our stadium, which, unfortunately, we haven’t given our fans much joy here.”

Improvement of results

“The numbers are there and some of the draws were more like wins than defeats, such as Mallorca, Cádiz and Getafe. We would have liked them to have been better and not to have lost against Atlético de Madrid. We want more. We have to be ambitious and hopefully we can win the remaining games at our ground. That’s our dream. We’ll see if we’re able to turn it into action.”

Transfer market

“The market is not determined by coaches. If teams come to pay big money, this club has always sold and rebuilt itself. If it is agreed between all parties that a player will not remain with us, we will look for resources so that the team is not weakened next season. We want to have a team that has the qualities to fight for Europe from the very beginning.”
