Villarreal B claim their third consecutive win after beating Alcorcón 2-3, with goals from Sierra, Albert García and Hugo López
Villarreal B earned a huge victory against Alcorcón thanks to goals from Sierra, Albert García and Hugo López (2-3) in a match where the reserve side had to come from behind after the hosts’ opening goal to secure three very important points that strengthen their position in the play-off places. David Albelda’s side record their third win in a row and are now six matches unbeaten.
The Madrid-based side began the match on the front foot. Villarreal B’s players looked uncomfortable during an opening phase inevitably marked by the heat.
The Villarreal B goalkeeper and captain, Rubén Gómez, was the standout performer of the first half, producing several outstanding saves. However, he was unable to prevent the opening goal in the 28th minute, as Vladys headed home at the far post following a lofted cross from the right flank.
The Mini Submarine responded and were close to drawing level shortly after the half-hour mark. José Gaitán attempted a brilliant long-range chip that almost caught goalkeeper Ayesa out, but a miraculous recovery save by the home keeper denied the equaliser.
Villarreal B’s improvement was rewarded with the equaliser. Sierra headed the ball into the net from a corner kick to restore parity (1-1, 38’). The goal further boosted Albelda’s side, who nearly went in front before the break with a powerful right-footed strike from Albert García, once again denied by an excellent save from Ayesa (44’).
The visitors took the lead just after the restart. Sierra played a long ball forward and Albert García beat his marker before going one-on-one with Ayesa and finishing with a delicate touch (1-2, 49’). A clever striker’s goal.
Soon after, Alassane Diatta came close with a free-kick that narrowly failed to find the back of the net.
The 1-3 arrived on the counter-attack. José Gaitán broke down the right and delivered a low cross that Hugo López converted from close range with a first-time finish (67’). The home side refused to give up and pulled one back through Borja Martínez (2-3, 78’).
Villarreal B withstood the late pressure to secure three vital points. Their next league fixture will be at the Mini Estadi against Ibiza (Saturday, 4.15pm CEST).
