The coach was proud of his players despite the result
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media after the 1-5 defeat against FC Barcelona and gave his assessment of the team’s performance:
“I think the result was excessive for what we saw on the pitch. I’m proud of the team’s work and the way we played and I’m sad about our defensive record. Today against a great team this was pronounced. There were two games. One until the goal that would make it 2-3 that they disallowed, the Barry header, which was the definitive moral blow for us, and the other from then on in which we were penalised by the result and Barça had everything in their favour. I think we were very much in the game until then’.
“Both teams had a lot of chances, but Barça were more accurate than us. I’m satisfied with the way the team competed against a great Barça. They scored two goals from two rebounds, but that’s not good or bad luck, we need to do a better job of resolving those chances.
“We did some good things in attack and we dominated some defensive situations, but we have to be more intense in the duels. I’m very hurt by Barça’s second goal because we were excessively passive. We did a lot of things well, but we have to improve defensively because we can’t concede so many goals.”
