The head coach underlines the importance of winning at Montilivi to continue staying ahead in the fight for the Champions League
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral appeared in front of the media to analyse the upcoming match against Girona, corresponding to Matchday 35 of the 2024/25 LALIGA EA Sports season, which will take place this Saturday, at 6:30pm CEST, at Montilivi.
Before starting the press conference, he wanted to send a message of support to Míchel Sánchez: “I want to send him all my support. He won’t be able to be with us pitchside. We wish him a speedy recovery. He has our support and thoughts, as is only natural. We’ll see him pitchside very soon.”
After the emotional message to his Girona counterpart, the Yellows’ coach analysed the match against the Catalans: “We’re only focused on winning. Every win we take is a step forward. Doing so in Girona would be a step towards the big prize. We know it will be difficult and they’re playing very well. The results haven’t been on their side, but now they’ve won, and that will give them confidence. We must focus on ourselves and be effective.”
Regarding the strengths of the opponent, Marcelino highlights their ability and talent: “They’ve taken a big step toward safety with the victory against Mallorca. They have great footballing potential. It will be a difficult match, but we’re playing at a high level. We see ourselves when we’re playing and training, and we know we’re competitive. In recent matches, we’ve only lost when we’ve been reduced to ten men. We have to avoid making mistakes, be ourselves, and be successful.”
For the Yellows’ coach, the importance of achieving a victory against the Catalan side lies in the value of relying on oneself: “It would be important to win because we’d be relying on ourselves. If we win, it would be like we’re at the quarter-final stage. That would give a morale boost. Plus, we’d have two of our three remaining home games left. Despite that, I prefer not to think about what’s next. We just have to focus on beating Girona. That’s the priority. We’re going to give everything we have to achieve it.”
