The Yellows earn an important point thanks to Kayla McKenna’s goal

Villarreal Women wanted the slip-up against Madrid CFF to remain a one-off result, as before then, they had gone five consecutive matches without defeat. So it proved to be. Sara Monforte’s side fought tooth and nail until the final whistle, earning another point thanks to Kayla McKenna’s early goal.

The game couldn’t have started in a better way for the Yellows, as in the 14th minute, the score was already 0-1. Kayla McKenna took advantage of a rebound from an earlier shot by Fatou Kanth to slot home. However, good fortune was no longer on the Yellows’ side. The very next move saw Levante Las Planas threaten an equaliser with a shot from Jiali, but it flew wide of the left-hand side of the goal.

The problems increased in the 31st minute when Venezuelan defender Yeni Giménez was injured, leaving the Yellows with one less player on the pitch until the 38th minute when Lucía Gómez came on. The final moments of the first half were dramatic for both teams, without much control of the ball or dangerous chances in the opposition’s box.

In the second half, the Catalans came out all guns blazing and Jessica Martinez’s first shot of the game went wide of the target. However, she did not waste the second chance she had. On a counter-attack, she took advantage of a defensive error to draw the game level (1-1, m. 65). Although the visitors had a couple more chances, led by Fatou Kanteh and María Llompart, they could do no more. In this way, Villarreal Women earned an important point in their battle for survival against a direct rival.
