Villarreal take on Real Sociedad with the aim of making an statement in the battle for Europe
There’s a big game this weekend at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Villarreal CF will face Real Sociedad at the Estadio de la Cerámica this Sunday, starting at 6.30pm CEST, in the match corresponding to matchday 27 of the 2022/23 LaLiga Santander season.
Playing in European competitions. This is the main objective of both sides for next season. To do so, with twelve games left in the season, they must try to get as many points as possible and Sunday’s game is the first step for both. A direct match to make a mark.
Only seven points separate the two teams in the standings. Real Sociedad, fourth with 48 points, are in the Champions League places, while Villarreal, sixth with 41 points, are in the Conference League spot. So, for the Submarine, this match is a great opportunity to close the gap on the Basque side and dream of fighting for a place in the best competition at club level once again.
The Yellows and Blue and Whites are two of the best teams in LaLiga. Villarreal are the fifth best home side (seven wins, two draws and three defeats), while Real Sociedad are the fourth best away side, with a record of eight wins, two draws and three defeats away from San Sebastián.
Recent league meetings between the two sides have been tight and very exciting. This season at the Reale Arena, Real Sociedad won 1-0 against Villarreal and last season the Basque team also won 1-2 at the Estadio de la Cerámica in another battle for European football.
You have to go back to Gameweek 18 of last season, at the Reale Arena, to see Villarreal’s last win against Real Sociedad (1-3). The side, coached at the time by Unai Emery, overcame the team from San Sebastián, with two goals from Gerard Moreno and a strike from Chukwueze to cancel out Isak’s early goal.
