Villarreal Women lose to Sevilla FC in a match with controversy due to a disallowed goal for the Submarine
Villarreal Women said goodbye to the Copa de la Reina in the last 16. Sara Monforte’s side lost by the smallest of margins against Sevilla (0-1) at the Mini Estadi in a tight tie, which had a moment of controversy due to a goal disallowed to Estefa Lima for offside before the tenth minute of the match.
The Submarine took the field with clear ideas and could have taken the lead in the ninth minute, but the referee disallowed a goal by Estefa for a dubious offside. The referee’s decision was a blow to the Yellows, who conceded the only goal of the game shortly afterwards. Ana Franco converted a through ball from Jessica Martínez in a quick transition.
In the second half, the Yellows tried to equalise to no avail. The game hardly had any chances and ended up being decided by the narrowest of margins. The positive note of the game was undoubtedly the return to the pitch of Tere Morató, who came on in the 76th minute after nine long months recovering from a serious knee injury.
The match also saw the debut of academy player María Tamarit with the first team. Villarreal Women will visit Atlético de Madrid at CD Alcalá de Henares this Saturday at 4pm CET.
