Villarreal Women head coach Virginia García has analysed their next league match against CA Osasuna (Saturday, 4pm CET). Here is what she had to say:
A clean slate
“Training has gone very well this week. It is true that we have several confirmed absentees due to injuries, as well as the two international players we have with Portugal -Rita Almeida and Maria Ferreira-. We have been self-critical of last week’s game, we have improved our behaviour, especially in defence, and we have reinforced our offensive behaviour. We were not up to the task, neither individually nor collectively. We want to put that game behind us, get back to what we were and get a win to clean up our image.”
The rival: CA Osasuna
“Osasuna are a difficult and tough opponent. Last season they were already fighting for promotion to Liga F and, moreover, they have kept almost their entire squad. They are a difficult opponent, who compete very well and who are going to demand a lot from us both in direct play and in second plays. They also have the current top scorer in the league. We have a clear idea of what our identity has to be, to grow with the ball, to get back to being the ones who take the initiative in the game and we have to go back to being that brave, solid team with joy in attack.”
A very tight division
“This division is very difficult because there are a lot of teams fighting for the same objective as us. It’s our day-to-day consistency that will keep us in the top positions. If we win, we are not the best and if we lose, we are not the worst. Nobody said this league was going to be a walkover and that’s the beauty of this league, that all the teams can fight to be at the top.”
Cup rival: Real Madrid
“We knew that the opponent was going to be difficult. It’s exciting because you’re up against an all-powerful team in Liga F and in Europe. We’re looking forward to that game, but we’re focused on the league. We’re very aware that our league is tomorrow’s game, but in the dressing room, in the end, it’s a kind of motivation, and we’re going to enjoy it and compete as well as possible.”
