Marcelino has declared himself proud and grateful to his players for the great work and effort they put in against OM
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral appeared before the media to analyse the Submarine’s 3-1 win over OM, which was not enough to qualify for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
“I’m proud and very grateful to these players. We played a very nice match with an outcome that is not fair in the overall tie. They were very good in the first leg. They scored practically everything they generated.” said the Yellows coach in his first intervention.
The coach also stressed that his team deserved to qualify for the next round: “We created a lot through play. We are very proud. We believed in our chances and the players showed that it was real. It’s a pity. Because in both games we deserved more on aggregate.”
Marcelino said that the team generated enough to make the comeback possible: “There was one team that was far superior to the other through the good work on the pitch. We deserved to score more than four goals and go through. It wasn’t fair that we ended the first half only 1-0. I can only remember one goal action by OM. Nothing else until stoppage time. We had chances of all kinds. Marseille’s best player by far was the goalkeeper.”
Finally, the Yellows’ head coach applauded the great game of his players: “We took risks, but there was no other choice. If we wanted to put into practice what we had said, that we wanted to compete after such an unlucky match, it had to be like that. We played a great game technically and physically. We showed solidarity. I was delighted with the game.”
