The Submarine look to secure their first win in Europe’s top competition against FC Copenhagen (Wednesday, 6.45pm CET)
Villarreal CF are experiencing one of the best sporting moments in the club’s history. Under Marcelino, the Yellow Submarine are flying high in domestic competition, having won their last six consecutive matches in LALIGA and collecting an impressive 35 points from their first 15 games. Now, the Yellows aim to transfer this outstanding form to the UEFA Champions League as they search for their first European victory against FC Copenhagen (Wednesday, 6.45pm).
So far in the Champions League, Villarreal drew an exciting match against Juventus (2-2) at the Estadio de la Cerámica and lost their remaining fixtures. Marcelino’s side currently sit on one point, which they will aim to increase by defeating the Danish outfit. To do so, they will need to change their luck—something they lacked against Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund—and continue delivering their best version.
Winning to keep dreaming in Europe
With only three matches left to play, Villarreal will push their chances of advancing to the next round to the limit. But before making any calculations, the team must focus on securing their first victory in the UEFA Champions League. They face an opponent who has never won on Spanish soil. FC Copenhagen have played nine matches in Spain, with a record of six defeats and three draws, scoring just two goals and conceding 18.
This will be the first ever meeting between Villarreal and the Danish side. Copenhagen arrive with four points, having beaten Kairat Almaty and drawn at home against Leverkusen, who will also face the Yellow Submarine later in the group stage.
A Danish giant searching for its best form
Copenhagen are one of the most successful teams in Denmark. Since their founding in 1992, the capital club has dominated the Danish Superliga, winning 16 league titles, ten domestic cups, and the 1992/93 Intertoto Cup.
Despite their historic pedigree, Jacob Neestrup’s side are not at their best heading into this match. They arrive after a 0-2 defeat against Sonderjyske and sit fifth in the league standings with 28 points.
