A win against Panathinaikos would seal qualification if Maccabi Haifa fail to beat Rennes

The Europa League returns to La Cerámica. Villarreal welcome Panathinaikos this Thursday (9pm CET) with the aim of adding another European triumph which, depending on what happens in the clash between Rennes and Maccabi Haifa, could certify qualification to the knockout phase.

Should they beat the Greek side, the Submarine would add their third win in European competition after victories over Rennes (1-0) and Maccabi Haifa (2-1). So far this season in the Europa League, the Yellows have just one defeat to their name. Precisely against Panathinaikos, who dealt them a heavy blow in their European opener.

To secure second place, in addition to a win for the Submarine, Maccabi Haifa must draw or lose against Rennes on Thursday. Should the Israeli side take all three points, Villarreal will have to wait until the direct clash on 6th December to seal second place.

It is worth noting that second place gives access to the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League, which will be played on 15th and 22nd February. The top finishers in the group stage get a direct ticket to the round of 16 (7th and 14th March).
