The Norwegian striker is the player who has scored the most goals this season for a Spanish club alongside Lewandowski
Alexander Sorloth’s season has been outstanding. It has been magnificent in terms of goalscoring figures and fantastic in terms of his impact on Villarreal CF, and all in his first season playing for the club. The Norwegian giant has found his footballing plenitude at the Yellow Submarine, where he has scored a total of 26 goals this season, becoming the player from a Spanish team who has scored the most goals this season along with Robert Lewandowski. He has achieved it, moreover, with a better goalscoring average than the Pole, who has needed more games to reach the same figure, and without taking a single penalty.
The Norwegian grew as the season progressed. He took on the goalscoring responsibility in a team that was going from strength to strength under Marcelino. He was on a roll and scored in twos (as against Sevilla and Rayo) or triples (as against Granada). In the last few matchdays, he got into the fight for the top scorer and after scoring four goals against Real Madrid, he even led the scoring charts before the last match of the domestic tournament.
Only luck prevented him from claiming the coveted individual title of top scorer in the league championship. An injury before the quarter of an hour mark left him out of the game at El Sadar when only one goal separated him from Artem Dovbyk, who the day before had scored a hat-trick (with two penalties) in the 7-0 win between Girona and Granada at Montilivi.
He had to leave the pitch too early. Without hiding his disappointment to see how misfortune had played a dirty trick on him. A cruel outcome that his teammates, the coaching staff and the thousands of Submarine fans all over the world who pursued the goal of the top scorer with as much enthusiasm as Sorloth himself. A voracious goalscorer and a hard-working and humble guy who, through hard work and goals, has connected with the Estadio de la Cerámica fans since his arrival in Vila-real. Not in vain, he has left goals to remember such as the 4-4 win against Real Madrid in which the Norwegian scored all four goals against Los Blancos.
Sorloth, in the Olympus of Yellows’ goalscorers
And no wonder. Beyond individual awards, the Scandinavian striker has completed one of the most prolific campaigns in terms of goals at Villarreal CF. His 26 goals in all competitions surpass Diego Forlán, the year he was Golden Boot (04-05) with 25 goals, all of them in LALIGA.
Only two geniuses with a magical left foot like Giuseppe Rossi and Gerard Moreno can boast of having scored more goals than Sorloth in a season as a Groguet. With one exception, Alexander Sorloth has not scored from eleven yards all season. The legendary Yellos No.22′ closed the 10/11 season with 32 goals and the Yellow Submarine’s all-time top scorer reached the 30-goal mark in a 20-21 season in which he lifted the UEFA Europa League, was named player of the tournament and won the Zarra Trophy at LALIGA EA Sports.
