“I feel very happy and proud. I came to the club when I was 11 years old. I didn’t imagine I would still be here so many years later. I am very happy to be here with my family. I always dreamed of coming here, playing with the first team and staying at this club.” were Álex Baena’s first words.

He also thanked the club for supporting him: “Thank you very much to the president, the club and all my family for being here. I’m very happy to continue at this club, which is my home and will continue to be for the next few years.”

When asked about his objectives, Baena stated that his priority is to continue enjoying himself at Villarreal: “This is my home and I want to be happy here, to find my best football and to be able to win another title at this club.”

As for his current form, the midfielder is satisfied with his role in the team after a successful loan spell at Girona: “Last year the loan was good for me, the environment, the team and the coach. I knew I had to have a good year to be able to come back. I did it and now I’m lucky enough to be back here in the first team squad, competing with my team-mates, who are very good and I have to work hard to try to earn my place and the coach’s trust.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that the team is in a good moment of form: “We are where we want to be, close to the Champions League places. It was the objective we set ourselves at the beginning: to fight there. We’re happy, but we have to keep going. We can’t fail, because those at the top don’t.”

Finally, Baena had some affectionate words in memory of vice-president José Manuel Llaneza: “He has always been a very special person for me. Villarreal would not be where it is without him. He is an emblem of Villarreal. We always have him very present. For my family and for me, he was fundamental. He helped us a lot. We are grateful because he always looked after us a lot and thanks to him I can be here today giving this press conference.”
