Marcelino: “We deserved the victory”

Villarreal’s head coach is very satisfied with his team’s performance against Alavés

Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral was very satisfied with his team’s performance after the 1-1 draw against Alavés. However he believes the Submarine deserved more.

Satisfaction

“It was a very competitive game. The draw is not unfair, but on balance we deserved to win on points. I am very satisfied with the mentality and the performance of the team. We deserved to win.”

Jorge Cuenca at left-back

“We knew there were going to be a lot of crosses from the wing. We made the decision to put Jorge on the left because it also allowed us to be more powerful at set pieces. He was up to the team’s standards.”

A very competitive match

“I liked both halves. In the first half our opponents created danger for us with crosses from the wings, but we had some very clear chances. I think we should have taken the lead in the first half. Overall, from my point of view, I liked my team throughout the game because it was very difficult. We showed we were solid and had good judgement on the ball on a very difficult pitch.”

No luck in front of goal

“We are lacking the cutting edge. We have to encourage the players to shoot at goal. Today Gerard had five shots on goal and one of them was saved off the line. The pitch also made it difficult for the attacking players to be accurate.”

Optimism for the future

“We are a recognisable team and we continue to improve. The players are responsible for the improvement. We are capable of beating anyone.”
