Marcelino: “I’m proud of how the team competed throughout”

The Yellows head coach was frustrated at a few errors that stopped the team from getting something from Vigo

Villarreal Cf head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke after the match at Balaídos to analyse the defeat (3-2) to RC Celta.

Here is what he had to say:

Match analysis

“The match was complex. A lot of things happened during the course of the match. We had a very good start, we outplayed our opponents and were in complete control. Then, in a very avoidable incident, we were reduced to ten men and I think that had an impact on us because we very quickly provoked the penalty and in professional football you usually end up paying for these actions.”

European options

“The defeat means we have lost some of the hope that we had. Although we knew it was complicated, I’ve always said that you have to have the desire to win and be better. I’m proud of the way the team competed with ten men, but isolated errors prevented us from getting more out of the game.”

Pride

“The effort from the players was tremendous. We were able to play toe to toe with ten players. We generated a lot of danger, we were daring with the ball, I think we did very well. I’m very satisfied. The feeling we have is that in the first 17 minutes we were far superior and then there were a lot of equal opportunities despite being a man down for more than 80 minutes.”
