Denis Suárez: “I was desperate to be back with the team”

The Galician midfielder underlined his excitement at returning in a competitive match and was positive about the side’s start to the league season

Denis Suárez appeared before the media on Tuesday to analyse the current situation of Villarreal CF, who face RCD Espanyol this Thursday at 7pm CEST at the RCDE Stadium.

Excitement to be back on the pitch again

“I’m very happy to be back in competitive action after such a long time. I was really looking forward to being able to train with the team regularly and to be available for call-ups. We’re very excited, because I think the squad is excited and so is the start. Hopefully what’s to come will be better than the start.”

A period of growth

“After a year without playing, you put everything into perspective. You enjoy the day-to-day and you enjoy your profession more. The truth is that I’ve missed it a lot, because it’s not the same to be able to train with your teammates as it is to train alone in the gym. Now I enjoy every training session as if it were my last. I want to work every day to get back to my best. Also, after a year of watching a lot of football without being able to play, I understand football better than before.”

His good understanding with Marcelino García Toral

“I’ve known Marcelino for many, many years and I know how he understands the game, how he trains and what he asks for in each position. In my case, I can play either on the right or left wing, or in a double pivot. This is like starting again and what better than to be with him, who knows what I can give him.”

Next opponent: RCD Espanyol

“I see a very competitive Espanyol. It’s true that their squad is a bit limited, but their head coach is getting good performances from all the players. I don’t think they will be an easy team, because they are very competitive. They are also very hungry players, they don’t give a ball away and they defend better than they have done in recent years.”
