Villarreal will be looking for their fourth consecutive win against Sevilla (Sunday, 6:30pm CET)
Villarreal face Sevilla FC at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán this Sunday, at 6:30pm CET, in the match corresponding to matchday 15 of the 2023/24 EA SPORTS LALIGA season.
The Submarine arrive in Seville in the best moment of the season after stringing together three consecutive wins against Zamora in the Copa del Rey, Osasuna in LALIGA and Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League. A change in dynamic driven by the arrival of Marcelino García Toral who, against Sevilla, a team he coached during the 2011/12 season, has a great opportunity to add a victory that could mean a turning point for the Yellows after a complicated start to the campaign.
Villarreal are currently 12th in the table with 15 points, nine points behind Real Betis Balompié, who occupy the European places, and three points ahead of 15th-placed Sevilla, who go into Sunday’s clash at a low ebb after being just four points clear of the relegation places.
Sevilla began the season with José Mendilibar at the helm, but after nine games, the club sacked the Basque coach and brought in Diego Alonso, a former coach of the Uruguayan national team who has only managed one win in his nine games in charge of Sevilla, with the 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad his last result in domestic competition.
Sevilla will be without captains Jesus Navas and Sergio Ramos, who were both sent off against Real Sociedad, due to suspension.
The Sánchez-Pizjuán, a tough stadium for Villarreal
Villarreal and Sevilla have met 42 times in the top flight of Spanish football and, in the duels played at Sevilla’s home ground, the statistics are clearly in favour of the home side. In total, Sevilla have won 14 times, drawn four and conceded three defeats to the Submarine at their ground, the last one in the 2019/20 season thanks to goals from Raúl Albiol and Toko Ekambi.
Referees
Díaz de Mera Escuderos will be the main referee of the match with Prieto Iglesias on VAR.
