The midfielder departs from Villarreal CF after three seasons
María Cienfuegos will not stay on with the Yellow Submarine next season. The midfielder leaves Villarreal CF after being part of the women’s first team for the past three campaigns.
One of the promotion heroines
Cienfu joined Villarreal Women in the historic 2020/21 season. In that campaign, the Asturian midfielder played a total of 13 matches, contributing to the Yellows’ huge milestone: promotion to the First Division.
With her daily hard work and determination on the field, the centre-midfielder earned Sara Monforte’s trust and became a key player for the Yellows’ formation. In fact, in the 2021/22 season, the team’s first year playing at the highest competitive level of national women’s football, she played 29 games out of 30. What’s more, she also participated in 2 Copa de la Reina matches.
In the current season, Cienfu followed a similar path: 29 matches in Liga F and 3 in the Copa de la Reina. Her vision of the game and ball control in the centre of the field has been crucial in securing top-flight football once again. And with that, the midfielder bids farewell to the Yellows after making 76 appearances and leaving behind a remarkable footprint.
Villarreal thanks Cienfu for her commitment to the club during her time wearing the yellow jersey and wishes her the best of luck and much success in her next professional chapter.
Thank you for everything, Cienfu!
