The Yellows were overcome by the Andalusians despite Fatou Kanteh’s goal
Villarreal Women were defeated by Sevilla FC in an evenly matched game, in terms of intensity, throughout the 90 minutes. Fatou Kanteh scored the goal for the Yellows, trying to come from behind after goals from Martín-Prieto and Gemma Gili, but Tony Payne finished off the game in the closing stages.
In the first half, Sara Monforte’s side were outplayed in the opening minutes by the Sevillians. The home side managed to create danger thanks to the attacking power of Martín-Prieto, who was already threatening in the 15th minute, but she made no mistake in the 19th minute. The Sevilla FC striker broke free from the defence to head the ball into Carmen Carbonell’s net. After the goal, the visitors’ defence reorganised and managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over before the break. In fact, Carbonell made a spectacular one-on-one save from Tony Payne. The clearest chance for the Yellows came from Kayla McKenna in the 30th minute, but the ball found the hands of the keeper.
After the break, the Andalusians extended their lead thanks to a goal from Gemma Gili, who made good on a great run down the right flank. Just 10 minutes later, Fatou Kanteh, taking advantage of a great assist from Lucía Gómez, beat Esther Sullastres to reduce the deficit. However, luck and persistence did not smile on Villarreal Women, who ended up being beaten in the 87th minute with a goal by Tony Payne.
