The Villarreal coach goes into the clash against Juventus in Turin on Wednesday (9pm CET) with a lot of desire and optimism
Villarreal coach Unai Emery spoke to the media at a press conference just hours before travelling to Turin for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Juventus at the Juventus Stadium (Wednesday, 9pm). The Basque coach spoke of the difficulty of facing a European giant in a competition like the Champions League and of the excitement that it generates in the city of Vila-real, with the people behind the team, who will try to be competitive throughout the game. These are the highlights of the coach’s statements:
The illusion ahead of aiming to win
“We are really looking forward to it. The team has been very consistent in this competition. We had a very good group stage and, in the first leg, we were able to turn the game around after a blow that can knock you out. They are the favourites because of their present, their history and what they represent, but we want to be able to have our place and our recognition. We have the challenge of beating them, which is very appealing and people are very excited about it.”
Competitiveness throughout the 90 minutes
“We are planning to be competitive for the full 90 minutes and to be ready for extra time. After removing the double value of away goals, it is possible that there will be extra time in more games. We must be able to respond with our best collective play and find individual brilliance against a great opponent who will set the bar high. We have high expectations in our confidence and in making the game more difficult.”
A different match to the one at La Cerámica
“I think the game will be very different to the one at home. Despite Juve being a team with a lot of defensive capabilities, they have very good players on the offensive end. From the respect they showed us at home and the result of the draw, they will want to win from the first minute. A lot of things will happen and we have to be prepared to take more control. You can count on the fingers of your hands the chances they get in every game. They have the desire to win.”
Optimism against a big opponent
“If we thought it was a final, there would be nothing else afterwards. We can’t consider the fact that it’s all or nothing in the last 16. If we win, there’s a lot left and if we lose, we’ll focus on LaLiga. We’ll have to play a very good game to win, but we’ve prepared for it. We are optimistic about our chances.”
A Champions League town
“Luckily, Villarreal gives the town the opportunity to be in Europe and the chance to play against the best. Between all of us, we want to contribute and help. We are proud that the fans are with us. Being in the last 16 is already important, but we want to continue in this competition.”
