Marcelino thanks the players for their effort after Villarreal’s victory in their league opener
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media on Friday to reflect on the Yellow Submarine’s 2-0 win over Real Oviedo at the Estadio de la Cerámica in the first league match of the season.
“Hopefully we can continue this good run and build on this result. It shows that we have been working really well throughout a month of pre-season, which is why winning is so positive,” said the Asturian coach.
In the same vein, the Villarreal boss thanked his players for their efforts in securing the three points. “Congratulations to all the players for the win.” He was also pleased to put an end to Villarreal’s poor run in home openers. “We were aware of the record and I spoke to the players about it. We are very happy to enter history by winning for the first time in a home debut.”
As for the game itself, Marcelino highlighted the impact of the weather conditions. “The heat and humidity here are an important factor.” He also explained how they influenced the team’s performance. “It was very hot and that also had an effect on us. In the first half we created more chances, but being ahead both in terms of players and on the scoreboard led us to manage the game at a more controlled tempo.”
Finally, the Villarreal head coach shared his thoughts on the debuts of the new signings. “The most important thing is their attitude. I won’t give ratings or grades, but I am sure they will contribute a lot in what is going to be a very demanding season.”
