Villarreal Women lose despite deserving a lot more against Real Madrid
Sara Monforte’s side, today led by Joan Goterris due to the suspension of the head coach, did not taste victory today at the Mini Estadi at the Villarreal CF Training Ground.
The match started with a high tempo from both sides. Villarreal Women had the first chance of the game in the seventh minute, when Pancha Lara’s free-kick was sent into the box, but Lara Mata was unable to make good contact with her shot. The Yellows, who took to the pitch full of personality, continued to press their opponents and put together great pieces of play looking for the opener. María Cienfuegos had an effort from the edge of the box after 15 minutes, testing the away goalkeeper.
The Submarine were also impressive in defence, staying strong despite the away side’s attacks. The side from the Spanish capital had a good chance halfway through the first half through Møller, but Elena de Toro saved well.
With 15 minutes less, another Pancha Lara’s free-kick caused danger, with Sheila Guijarro’s volley nearly giving the Submarine their first goal. It ended 0-0 at half-time, with all to play for in the second half.
The Yellows went for it from the start after half-time. Once more from a set piece, Pancha Lara found Lara Mata’s head in the 48th minute, but the goal still evaded the home side. Ainoa Campo, from the rebound, caused Misa to save at full stretch.
In the 79th minute, Real Madrid went ahead through Athenea, who, with her right foot put the ball in the top corner. There was nothing de Toro could do. Alberto Toril’s side extended their lead late on through Esther.
Despite going behind, Monforte’s side didn’t give up and both Belén Martínez and Aixa Salvador had good chances.
Next up for Villarreal Women will be an away trip to Levante Women on Sunday 12th December at 11am CET, corresponding to Matchday 13 of the Primera Iberdrola season.
