The Submarine lose to Pontevedra after a Dalisson goal
Villarreal were eliminated from the Copa del Rey after losing narrowly to Pontevedra after a Dalisson goal in the closing stages of the game. It was not a good performance by the Yellows, who bid farewell to the cup competition.
The Submarine fielded a team that featured the debut of young Alassane Diatta, who played his first official match with the first team, partnering Dani Parejo in the middle of the park. The starting XI also included home-grown talents Pau Navarro and Pau Cabanes.
Pontevedra, who currently occupy top spot in their group in Segunda RFEF, began to create danger in the opening minutes, forcing Luiz Junior to intervene on several occasions. The Yellows, meanwhile, were trying to link up with Barry and Gerard up front. The Yellows No.15 had a chance to score, but his long-range effort ended up in the hands of Manu Vizioso.
At the start of the second half, Marcelino brought on Sergi Cardona and a little later Pape Gueye. The aim was to find a way to hurt the Galician side.
The Yellows looked for the goal. Thierno Barry could have put his side ahead with two deflected shots from corners.
After a few minutes without chances, it was Pontevedra who took the lead with a goal from Dalisson.
The striker unleashed a left-footed shot from distance that beat Luiz Junior just inside the post (86th minute).
Villarreal CF’s next game is on Sunday 8th December at San Mamés against Athletic Club (4:15pm CET).
