The Yellow Submarine defeat RCD Mallorca with goals from Gerard and Oluwaseyi
A historic night at the Estadio de la Cerámica. With a hard-fought win over RCD Mallorca (2-1), Villarreal CF have achieved the best start to a top-flight season in the club’s history, reaching 29 points from the first thirteen league matches—surpassing the previous record of 28 points set in the 2007/08 campaign.
The match began with high intensity and an exchange of early blows. In the 6th minute, Gerard Moreno struck first. The Catalan forward fired past Bergstrom to make it 1-0, scoring for the fourth match in a row.
However, the joy was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Mallorca equalised through Samu, who sent a precise low shot into the far corner (1-1). The game entered a frantic phase that Villarreal gradually managed to control, slowing the tempo and imposing a more patient, possession-based style.
Marcelino García Toral’s side grew into the match and came close to taking the lead on two occasions. Moleiro had an effort ruled out for offside, and Pepe fired a powerful shot across goal that went inches wide.
After the break, Villarreal pushed forward in search of the second goal, despite Mallorca repeatedly attempting to disrupt the rhythm of play. In the 72nd minute, Alberto Moleiro forced Bergstrom into a key save, as the goalkeeper blocked his effort with his foot.
The Submarine’s persistence was finally rewarded in the 83rd minute. Tani Oluwaseyi lifted the stadium to its feet with a moment of brilliance: controlling Buchanan’s pass inside the box, turning sharply, and finishing with a stunning backheel to seal the win.
Villarreal CF will now turn their focus to Tuesday 25th October, when they face Borussia Dortmund at 9pm CET on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League.
