The Submarine’s good run comes to an end at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium
Villarreal fell to Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium (4-0) which has put a stop to their streak of going four consecutive matches without losing (Betis, Astana, Alavés and Espanyol).
Fran Escribá made four changes to his starting eleven with respect to the previous starting lineup against RCD Espanyol at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Semedo, Rukavina, Fornals and Enes Ünal were all brought into the eleven for the match against the side from Madrid.
The first half was full of chances for both teams. Villarreal threatened the locals early on with two brilliant through balls by Manu Trigueros, but neither Mario nor Bakambu could score past Guaita. The home side responded with a great shot by Arambarri, forcing Barbosa to make a spectacular save.
There were two more opportunities before the break, one for each team. Firstly, Fornals put a cross in with his left foot and Bakambu’s header went just over the bar. Then right after, Bergara had a good shot in the box but Barbosa kept the ball out again.
The second half started badly for Villarreal. Ángel Rodríguez put Getafe in front with a finish at the back post from a corner kick.
The second goal for the locals came ten minutes later. Jorge Molina took advantage of a defensive error by the Yellows and went through one on one with Barbosa, scoring by shooting under the Villarreal goalkeeper. Getafe then extended their lead with a third, this time Bergara scored from another ball into the box. The home side’s fourth and final goal was Ángel’s second of the match which he scored with his head from a wide free kick.
The Yellow Submarine’s next match is in Israel against Maccabi de Tel Aviv on Thursday on Matchday 2 of the Group stage of the UEFA Europa League (9:05pm CEST).
