The Submarine beat Alavés in style and end the day in a Champions League spot
Villarreal beat Alavés at the Estadio de la Cerámica and ended the day third in LaLiga, waiting for what happens for the rest of Matchday 10. The goals from Karl Toko Ekambi (2), Gerard Moreno and Javi Ontiveros meant it was a win to remember for the Yellows, who knew how to control the game until killing it off late on.
Javi Calleja went for the same base of footballers who have started so well this season. The only change from the XI who beat Espanyol was that of Mario Gaspar replacing the injured Rubén Peña.
The Yellows started well. They looked to dominate the ball, while the away side were looking to be a threat on the counter. The first real chance was in Santi Cazorla’s right boot. His powerful shot was deflected by the opposition defender at the end, when the Estadio de la Cerámica was ready to celebrate a goal (m.11). Only a few seconds later, the fans did get their opener.
Gerard played a pass inside to Toko Ekambi, with the striker getting in behind the defence due to his speed, finishing with class and cold blood against the oncoming Pacheco. After a few seconds of uncertainty, VAR confirmed that the No.17 was onside (1-0, m.12). With this goal, the Submarine made it 23 games in a row where they had scored, with the record stretching back to last season.
Villarreal wanted more. Alberto Moreno nearly scored in the 26th minute with a powerful left-footed effort that went inches wide of the post.
Alavés equalised just after the start of the second half. Lucas Peréz’s acrobatic shot squeezed past Sergio Asenjo (1-1, m. 50).
Calleja’s team reacted and aimed for the victory. Gerard’s shot was just wide, while Cazorla’s long-range effort bounded off the post. But their insistence paid off. Toko Ekambi made it 2-1, pushing the ball into the back of the net after a low Moi Gómez cross from the left. It was a great piece of play by the midfielder (m.65).
The goal to make it 3-1 mixed Cazorla’s class with Gerard’s killer instinct. The midfielder left it on a plate for the striker after a great piece of play from Toko Ekambi (m.83). The final goal, for 4-1, came in added time, when Ontiveros perfectly struck a free-kick that went in after a deflection from the wall.
Next up for Villarreal CF will be a match against SD Eibar in Ipurúa (Thursday, 7pm CEST). Let’s hope this run continues!

Javi Calleja volvió a apostar por el mismo bloque de futbolistas que tan buen rendimiento le está dando en este inicio de temporada. La única novedad con respecto al once que venció ante el Espanyol fue Mario Gaspar, que reemplazó al lesionado Rubén Peña.
La maquinaria del Submarino salió engrasada. Los amarillos acaparaban la posesión del balón, mientras que el conjunto vitoriano apostaba por el contragolpe. La primera gran ocasión estuvo en la bota derecha de Cazorla. Su potente disparo fue desviado en última instancia por la zaga rival cuando ya se cantaba el gol en las pobladas gradas del Estadio de la Cerámica (m. 11). Solo unos segundos más tarde, la afición estalló de alegría.
Gerard Moreno filtró un pase interior para Toko Ekambi, el franco-camerunés se fue por velocidad y definió con tremenda categoría y sangre fría ante la salida de Pacheco. Tras unos segundos de incertidumbre, el VAR corroboró que el ‘17’ estaba en posición correcta (1-0, m. 12). Con este gol, el Submarino acumula ya 23 partidos seguidos marcando entre el final de la campaña pasada y el inicio de esta. Impresionante.
El Villarreal quería más, aunque también se aplicaba para despejar las acometidas rivales. Alberto Moreno rozó el gol en el 26’ con un zurdazo que se fue lamiendo la cepa del poste vitoriano.
El Alavés empató al poco de iniciarse el segundo acto. Lucas Pérez anotó en posición acrobática (1-1, m. 50).
El equipo de Calleja se fue a por la victoria. Gerard disparó cruzado, mientras que Santi Cazorla estrelló un tremendo zurdazo en el palo. La insistencia tuvo premio. Toko Ekambi marcó el 2-1 al empujar a la red un centro de Moi Gómez desde el costado izquierdo. Tremenda jugada del alicantino que tuvo el mejor final (m. 65).
El 3-1 mezcló la clase de Cazorla con el olfato de gol de Gerard Moreno. El asturiano enfiló la portería vitoriana tras una genial dejada de Toko Ekambi y centró raso al segundo palo para que el ‘7’ anotara con un tiro sutil (m. 83). El 4-1 definitivo llegó ya en el tiempo de descuento. Ontiveros ejecutó con maestría una falta desde las frontal y el balón entró tras tocar en la barrera.
