The American facility is a benchmark for sporting and academic excellence
Villarreal Erie Academy is a pioneering institution with the Yellows’ first residential academy outside our borders. Like at the José Manuel Llaneza Training Ground, this academy, part of the Villarreal Academy, is home to more than 50 athletes and students from more than 15 different countries, who train daily under the guidance of Villarreal CF’s coaches and the Villarreal Erie Academy’s own staff.
Located in the US state of Pennsylvania, Villarreal Erie Academy opened the doors of its residence in September 2024. Since then, it has been nurturing and honing the talents of its athletes at its impressive high-performance sports centre.
World-class facilities
The academy is based at the Erie Sports Center, a multi-sport complex with an indoor 11-a-side football pitch, which allows its student-athletes to enjoy the game all year round. The entire facility features ten football pitches, as well as dormitories to accommodate over 400 residents, a public school, cafeteria and a state-of-the-art medical centre that provides services to athletes, students, staff and the local community.
Villarreal Academy offers great opportunities
Villarreal Erie Academy teams compete in the UPSL, which is currently the largest and most competitive professional development league in North America.
It occupies the fourth tier of the US football pyramid. The Yellow Submainre, in their first year of competition, managed to qualify for the play-offs. An impressive result, sustained by the good performances of their players, attracted the attention of different university teams.
Villarreal CF, influential in the development of American football
Troy Bingham, director of Villarreal Erie Academy, highlights the importance for the United States to integrate a club like Villarreal CF in its development football: “Partnering with Villarreal CF has allowed us to offer a LALIGA academy experience in the United States. Having Villarreal CF coaches who follow the club’s methodology and planning sessions allows us to develop our players for international football. It also allows our players to be seen by scouts and coaches who understand the level required in Europe and provide those opportunities for players who can meet that standard.”
In addition, Troy Bingham, underlined why the residential programme is so exclusive to Villarreal Erie players: “At Villarreal Erie Academy, players receive the same level of training and methodology as Villarreal CF’s youth players in Spain. All coaches learn and develop under the guidance of highly qualified and experienced head coaches from Villarreal CF in Spain.”
Villarreal Erie Academy, committed to female football
Finally, Bingham added: “Villarreal Erie Academy is one of the few full-time residential academies for girls in the United States and the only one with an international methodological partner such as Villarreal CF. We are also one of the few academies that has a license in the USL2 and USL W League providing opportunities for its players to reach higher levels of the game.”
