Villarreal CF collaborate in an investigation about mental health

Villarreal CF has collaborated in a scientific study that compares the behaviour of elite footballers with that of the rest of the population. The study, published in the prestigious ‘Sports’ journal, featured the participation of Héctor Usó, director of the club’s Medical Services, thanks to the commitment of the Yellows through the Endavant Formació project.

The research, led by Isabel Almodóvar, coordinator of the research group Quality of Life, Sport and Health (QSH) of the UJI (Jaume I University) and president of the Official College of Nurses of Castellón (COECS), has shown the benefits of sport for mental health. In this sense, the study concludes that being a professional footballer is a protective factor for mental health and acts as an antidote against behavioural disorders that can lead to addictions such as gambling or dependence on video games, among others.

Also participating as researchers and co-authors were Rafael González, treasurer of COECS and member of the research group Quality of Life, Sport and Health (QSH) of the UJI; Paula Sánchez, principal investigator of the Health Outcomes Research Group (GIRS) of the UCH CEU; Gonzalo Haro, psychiatrist at the Provincial Hospital of Castellón and principal investigator of the Mental Health and Addictions (TXP) research group at UCH CEU, and researchers from the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCH CEU María Gimeno, Ana Blanco and Antonio Real.
