Miguel Álvarez’s side will face the English side in the quarter-finals
Villarreal U23s will face Southampton in the Premier League International Cup quarter-finals. The Yellows Academy side qualified for this stage of the tournament after qualifying top of Group E (with seven points from a possible nine), ahead of Liverpool, Hertha Berlin and Swansea City. The time and date for the match is yet to be confirmed, as is where it will take place.
Southampton U23s also finished top of their group. They were Group A winners, also getting seven points, finishing ahead of Dinamo Zagreb, West Ham United and Porto.
The objective of the Premier League International Cup, which takes place exclusively in England and Wales, is to encourage and improve youth football. The competition started with 24 teams, 12 British sides and 12 other invited clubs from across Europe, who have a strong academy history.
