The Yellows beat Cacereño in an important match in their bid for survival
Villarreal Women knew the importance of the match, as only a win would bring them closer to achieving the coveted goal of survival. Against them, Cacereño came to the Mini Estadi with the need to win in order to continue in pole position in fighting for the play-offs. A goal from Aixa Salvador, from the penalty spot, in the first half was enough for the Yellows to stay alive for another game.
In the first half, both teams were a little nervous, as the first 25 minutes were a tentative game of passing the ball around and getting a feel for the pitch. From this moment on, Jordi Ferriols’ team began to dominate the ball control and to feel more comfortable in attack. Aixa, in the 37th minute, had the clearest chance of the game. However, the ball went just over the crossbar.
For their part, Cacereño tried to cause fear with a long-range shot from Yorladiz, but Montse Quesada took control of the ball without any problems. In response to this threat, Aixa Salvador again broke into the box, shot at goal and forced a penalty, as the ball hit the hand of defender. It was the forward herself who converted the penalty, giving the Yellows some breathing space before the break (1-0).
In the second half, Jordi Ferriols’ team had to make a huge effort in defence, withstanding the continuous attacks from Cacereño, who were looking for an equaliser. However, despite their continued efforts, the Yellows were able to hold out for three vital points. In fact, they almost scored the second goal when Cienfu broke down the right flank and gave it to Aixa, but the Caceres keeper was quick to stop her one-on-one.
Villarreal Women’s next game, and last final, will be on Sunday 27th April, at 12pm CEST, away to CF Alba Fundación.
