Fran Escribá said his players had a great match and read the game perfectly
Villarreal Manager, Fran Escribá, emphasized after the win against Sporting de Gijón (1-3) that the Submarine performed to the level they need to be at to achieve their goals. “It’s not that the team has switched on, just that things are going well for us. There have been games that we’ve deserved to win. It’s true that in the Europa League the team had a lot of pressure on them in the last match, with the possibility of getting knocked out, which is tough to deal with. We saw against Atlético that one of the keys (to that performance) was that the team had lifted that pressure off themselves. Now we’ve just got the cup match left, and if everything goes well and we qualify, we have to start thinking about everything we’ll be playing for come January: first up is another cup tie, the Barcelona match… we have a difficult schedule and we have to stay calm and know that this is the level we must be at to get where we want to be”.
When talking about the match, the Yellows Manager explained that his players knew how to read the match and that is what led to the win. “Our dominance in the first half was credit to the players, who knew how to read the game. In the second half Sporting did pressure us a lot more, but on the counterattack it was clear that our third goal was much closer than their first. When the match finished, I told the players that they had played really well and congratulated them on that. Now, we must think about Toledo. We cannot think the job is already done. We have to train well tomorrow and Monday, and then on Wednesday they can forget about me for a good few days”.
