The Italian-German midfielder has been one of the LaLiga’s best newcomers so far this season
Villarreal’s Italian-German attacker, Roberto Soriano, also took advantage of the international break, like his teammate Víctor Ruiz, to speak with the press at the Villarreal CF Training Ground (Ciudad Deportiva). Even though his start to the season with the Submarine has been outstanding, the number 20 has still not been given the opportunity to play for his national team. “To play for Italy is a goal for me. I haven’t been called up this time, but I’ll take these days off to recover”, he explained.
Nevertheless, the centre midfielder was quick to focus his attention on the next clash against Athletic. “They’re a very tough opponent. Athletic are very strong at their stadium, but we think we’ve shown that we’re a great team that works very hard, both in defence and attack”, he commented. “Our opponents find it hard to score on us and that’s down to everyone’s work. We will go to Bilbao with conviction, to come away with three more points”.
In terms of his individual and the team’s performance he highlighted “the quality of the group”, clear to him from day one at the Submarine. “Right now we’re third and we want to continue like this. It will be tough, but we’re prepared to keep going on this track”, he confirmed. “At first it was difficult because I was playing in a different position (in Sampdoria he played as a centre midfielder or second striker), but I’m adapting more and more to my teammates’ movements. I’m adapting more by the day. It’s a new role for me, but I think it’s a good thing”, he added.
Soriano’s goalscoring ability
Roberto has been adding to his goalscoring account. In his last year in Italy he scored 8 goals in the league, which is not bad at all as he played most matches in centre midfield. Fran Escribá admitted that he has asked him to get forward more, shoot more and focus more on finishing. As of now, he has 3 goals and 3 assists from 11 matches. Not bad at all. “I don’t care if I score or not. The most important thing is that the tream is doing well. I just try to do the best that I can, both in defence and attack. I’m getting on very well with my teammates”.
About shooting from long range, a hot topic lately thanks to great goals from Trigueros and Soriano himself against Real Betis, he finished by saying the team “has the ability to shoot very well from far out. You can’t always shoot from inside the box and it’s a good option”.
