Villarreal want to forget the controversial draw against Real Sociedad by beating RC Celta
Villarreal travel to Galicia to face RC Celta this Wednesday at 7pm CEST at Balaídos Stadium. The Groguets will be fighting for another away win. Away from La Cerámica, the Submarine are at their best and will try to rely on that form to secure fifth place in LALIGA.
Finishing in the top five would give Villarreal access to the UEFAChampions League this season. At the moment, they are in fifth, in a battle with Real Betis, who bounced back in style from the painful defeat that the Yellows inflicted on them at the Villamarín (1-2). They have done so by taking all three points with a win in Girona (1-3), a result that the Groguets were unable to match this weekend against Real Sociedad (2-2), in a duel marred by refereeing controversy, with three local goals disallowed by Cuadra Fernández.
With a lot at stake and the important absence of Sergi Cardona -who is serving a suspension-, the Submarine will visit the Galician side who, in eighth place with 43 points, are also immersed in the continental battle, with options to qualify for the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League.
They also face the match with the need for a victory after two consecutive defeats against FC Barcelona (4-3) and RCD Espanyol (0-2), two of the most in-form teams in the league.
Aiming to return to winning ways at Balaídos
Villarreal CF haven’t been able to win away at Celta in their last three trips to Vigo. The Yellows lost last season 3-2, and drew the two previous meetings in 2022/23 and 2021/22. The Submarine have only won five out of 18 league ties played at Balaídos.
The first meeting between the two sides this season, at the Estadio de la Cerámica, ended 4-3 in favour of the Yellows. Dani Parejo decided the tie with a 99th-minute penalty. Madness.
