Villarreal CF paid tribute to the Playas de Castellón athletics club ahead of the tie with Leganés
In the build up to the game with CD Leganés, Villarreal CF honoured athletes from the Playas de Castellón athletic club, who have once more been crowned Spanish champions, as well as winning 19 medals (eight golds, five silvers and six bronzes) in the Indoor Track Championships which took place in Ourense (Galicia). In representation of all the medallists, triple jumper Pablo Torrijos, from Castellón, who broke the Spain record with 17.18 and has confirmed his participation for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer, took the honorary kick-off before the game.
Representing Playas de Castellón, beyond Torrijos, Jorge Ureña (gold in heptathlon), Cristina Ferrnado (gold in high jump), Alexis Sastre (gold in pentathlon), Miguel Ángel Sancho (bronze in high jump), Emilio Bellido (bronze in triple jump) and Jorge Dávila (bronze in heptathlon) were all in attendance.
Playas de Castellón and Torrijos are part of Villarreal CF’s Endavant Esports project.
