The Argentinean has played 900 minutes this season and has been called up for Argentina again
Mateo Musacchio is having a great start to the season. The Argentinean defender is a fundamental pillar in the Submarine back line, racking up 900 minutes between LaLiga Santander (630), UEFA Champions League Play-off (180) and UEFA Europa League (90) competitions so far this campaign. In addition, Musacchio seems to be a certainty in the Argentina national team, playing the entire match in their last fixture against Paraguay and having been called up to face Brazil and Colombia in mid-November.
Villarreal are the second team to have conceded the least goals in the LaLiga Santander (5), only beaten by Atlético de Madrid (4). Mateo Musacchio forms part of this solid Submarine defence and did not hesitate to praise the sacrifice made by the whole team: “We’re really happy about how the team is doing so far, it’s not just about the defenders though, but a result of the work of the whole team. It’s true that, with respect to last year, we’re taking more risks in defensive areas, but for now it’s working quite well”, the Argentine explained.
In terms of this weekend’s match against SD Eibar (12pm CET), Musacchio said it will be a tough game: “Eibar are a great team, they’ve shown that for many years and they’ve played brilliant games at their home ground. We expect a difficult match, at a hard pitch where the people put the pressure on”, he commented.
With regard to the Submarine’s objectives, Musacchio discussed how difficult it is to fight for fourth place. “It’s always very difficult to fight for fourth place. This year is not going to be an exception. We’re not going to drive ourselves crazy. We’ll take it game by game. There are matches that you enjoy more, and others that you don’t enjoy so much, like last Sunday. We’re very happy, united and I think this reflects out on the pitch in every match”, he concluded.
