The Submarine defeat Barça and secure a place in Europe’s top competition
Die Meister, Die Besten, les grandes équipes, the Champions! Marcelino’s men produced a stunning performance to defeat Barça 2-3 at the Estadi Olímpic, with goals from Ayoze, Comesaña and Buchanan. The result, combined with Betis’ 3-1 defeat at the Metropolitano, confirms Villarreal’s qualification for Europe’s elite competition, the stage where the continent’s very best sides compete.
The opening goal came almost before the match had settled. In the fourth minute, a quick break down the right saw Comesaña play a perfectly timed ball into the path of Pepe, who used his pace to get in behind and squared it for Ayoze to slot home with a composed finish past Ter Stegen.
With the Submarine well organised on the pitch, Barça pushed their lines higher in search of an equaliser. Although the Yellows held firm—thanks to two outstanding saves from Luiz Júnior to deny Lewandowski and Eric García—and even came close to doubling their lead through Pepe, the hosts eventually found their breakthrough.
In the 37th minute, Lamine Yamal levelled the match with a trademark strike from the edge of the area, leaving the Villarreal goalkeeper with no chance. Then, in first-half stoppage time, Fermín pounced on a loose ball to fire home from close range and put the hosts in front.
With Ayoze forced off through injury, Marcelino introduced Barry after the break, and Villarreal stayed true to their strategy of pressing and playing with purpose. It paid off once again. In the 50th minute, the Yellows won the ball high up the pitch and Yeremy threaded a clever pass through for Comesaña, who found himself one-on-one and delicately chipped the ball over Ter Stegen to make it two apiece.
After the equaliser, the Catalans tried to spark the game back into life, but proceedings entered a lull with few clear-cut chances. Only Raphinha for the hosts and Comesaña again for Villarreal threatened to change the scoreline.
With ten minutes to go, Marcelino’s side showed sharp thinking from a quick throw-in. In a slick move between Gerard Moreno and Sergi Cardona, the full-back delivered a superb low cross that Gerard dummied, allowing Buchanan to arrive unmarked at the far post and finish confidently for the third.
A monumental win in Montjuïc and a historic achievement for the club. The Champions League anthem will echo around the Estadio de la Cerámica next season.
