The Brazilian born Spaniard holds the record for the most matches played in a Villarreal shirt, with no less than 363 encounters. Specifically, Senna played 292 matches in the Spanish First Division (LaLiga), 16 in the Copa del Rey, 4 in the Intertoto Cup, 11 in the UEFA Cup, 27 in the Champions League and 13 in the Europa League, making him the player to have disputed the most official matches in different competitions for Villarreal CF. Furthermore, Senna gained dual nationality and was able to be called up for the Spanish national team, with whom he won the UEFA European Championship in 2008.
Charismatic, selfless and tremendously professional, Marcos Senna won the hearts of the fans from almost day one. After difficult beginnings in the Submarine – with having to overcome two serious knee injuries – the centre midfielder came back stronger and became a true symbol of the Yellows’ growth, earning him admiration from all over Europe.
After 11 years defending the Villarreal shirt and helping them to achieve promotion to the First Division, Senna decided embark on the challenge of playing in a different league and went to play for the New York Cosmos in the United States. In November 2015 he hung up his boots once and for all and became an Ambassador for La Liga. Welcome back eternal captain!
