The Yellows head coach praised the effort and ambition of his players, although he stressed that they need to be stronger at the back
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral spoke to the media to analyse the draw against Girona FC (2-2) at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
“We didn’t score the third goal. I think we considered that the game was over at 2-0 and from then on we lacked continuity in our play. We didn’t have much luck either. The goal that made it 2-1 comes from a rebound that we should have avoided. Then we missed the chance to make it 3-1 with a clear opportunity and they equalised in stoppage time,” explained Marcelino.
He believes there was a lack of decisiveness and a lack of desire for the ball against the Catalans: “We weren’t at our level in the second half. We needed to want the ball more. We also lacked some mobility and a bit of personality. I also felt we lacked defensive strength in defence. That’s why we lost two points. We could have put the game to bed and we didn’t. I’m not happy with the second half. I’m not happy with our second half performance.”
Despite conceding a stoppage-time equaliser, Marcelino applauded the attitude and effort of his players: “We played against a direct rival, who will be fighting for the same objectives at the end of the season. We need to be more convincing at the back if we are to end the season near the top of the table. In any case, I’m satisfied with the players’ effort. The team generally looks good and wants to win at all times. Girona were simply more successful with their chances.”
