The Villarreal coach has highlighted his side’s competitive performance at Reale Arena
Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral was disappointed with the result after his side’s good performance in the defeat to Real Sociedad and wanted to highlight that the Yellows, after what they saw on the pitch, deserved better luck. “We are satisfied with the way we competed. We were only inferior to Real Sociedad in terms of the result. They only outplayed us in the last 10 minutes of the first half. They were almost 100% effective, but that’s football. Real conceded very little, but I think we had enough chances to deserve more. One mistake and a great action by a good player decided the game.”
On the other hand, he also emphasised the Submarine’s good defensive display: ‘”We defended very well today. To come to the Reale Arena and for the rival to have created just one action against you practically on the counter-attack is something to be satisfied with from a defensive point of view. We are also satisfied from an offensive point of view because we generated enough to score a goal. To compete the way we competed against Real Sociedad, if we look at the overall result, I don’t think Villarreal deserved to lose.”
As for the rest of the season, just as the league reaches its halfway point, Marcelino believes that the key will be to have better luck with injuries and to correct the imbalances at the back: “There are two determining factors for the second half of the season. One is to correct our defensive level and the other is to have better luck with injuries. When the team was on a roll, three out of four attacking players got injured in one game.”
