The Yellows head coach highlighted Villarreal’s clear superiority in the second half of the derby against Valencia (0-2)
Villarreal CF head coach Marcelino García Toral analysed in the press room the important and well-deserved 0-2 victory over Valencia CF at the Camp de Mestalla.
“It was an even first half, although we were slightly better. We had the game under control and the goal, just before half-time, was very important. In the second half, our superiority was clear. We created chances to win by a bigger margin. We are satisfied because playing at Mestalla is always very difficult for any opponent, and even more so for Villarreal, as we had gone many years without winning here. That shows how tough both the rival and the stadium are,” Marcelino explained.
In the same vein, the Asturian coach underlined that Villarreal were deserved winners of the derby: “We controlled the game, reaching the final third with an advantage. We lacked some depth and better decision-making to score more goals. Matches are also about moments. Going into the break ahead set the game up for us, and in the second half we were clearly the better side and fully deserved the victory.”
Furthermore, Marcelino expressed his great satisfaction with the team’s progress over the first ten matches: “We are very proud and pleased with what we have done so far. We had a demanding schedule. We have collected 20 points out of a possible 30, facing top sides while also competing in the Champions League. We are very grateful to the players. In addition, I believe we still have room for improvement, which is very positive.”
Lastly, the Yellows boss praised Gerard Moreno, who made his 300th appearance in a Villarreal CF shirt: “Hopefully he keeps adding minutes and matches. We have to take things step by step. I am happy with him — his attitude is excellent. If the team performs and he is in good shape, he will deliver great performances. It is exciting to see Gerard at a high level again.”
