The Yellows’ head coach was pleased with how his team looked against Real Madrid
Marcelino García Toral, Villarreal CF coach, spoke to the media after the defeat against Real Madrid at the Estadio de la Cerámica (1-2).
In his appearance, the Asturian coach wanted to highlight the great work and effort shown by his team on the pitch: “We are very satisfied with how hard we ran and annoyed by the result. We played a great game. We know that our opponents have very good players and our success in the penalty area ended up deciding the game. I’m proud and satisfied with the team’s commitment. The result hurts us.”
He also praised his players, especially in attack: “We started the first half very well, we scored the goal and we were good in defence, but in ten minutes the opposition took advantage of our lack of defensive strength and came back at us. Our opponents also play. We played a brilliant game in many aspects, with 23 shots and only one goal. We have to persist. That’s how the goals will come. It’s a shame because of the team’s work and the physical commitment.”
On the other hand, Marcelino commented on the starting debut of recent winter signing Tajon Buchanan, praising his performance: “I’ve seen him well. It’s very difficult because he’s come from playing very little, as well as the injury he had. To come in and adapt to a new team and a new country and perform well is not easy. He’s worked hard, he’s managed to connect shots, he’s put in crosses… We’re very satisfied. It also allows us to be competitive in that position. He will be able to give us more as the weeks go by.”
Finally, he underlined his optimism about the end of the season: “If we defend like this, we will lose very little. If we play games in defence like we did today, we’ll lose very few points and we’ll be at the top of the table. If we play games like the one against Alavés, the opposite will happen.”
